Robert A. Gonzalez was born on March 12, 1952 in Pomona California, the first of 4 children to Guadalupe Gonzalez Ybarra and Jessie Soto Macias. Raised in a devout Catholic family in the Diocese of Tucson, early, as a boy he sensed the calling to be a priest. He attended Regina Cleri High School Seminary in Tucson; then the major seminary at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio.

Ordained in 1978, he did pastoral work in the Diocese of Tucson until 1985. He then began post-graduate studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He completed a doctorate in philosophy which he earned with Summa Cum Laude distinction in 1990. Subsequently, he was professor of philosophy at the Josephinum until 2005; having also served for a time as Vice Rector of the College of Liberal Arts.

Fr. Gonzalez then returned to the Diocese of Tucson and is currently serving as Parochial Vicar at St. John the Evangelist parish in Tucson, Arizona; a dynamic parish well-known for its catechesis on the Virgin of Guadalupe; and as well as its Guadalupe pastoral praxis. Father Gonzalez is concluding studies on the Nican Mopohua and on the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. He has used the findings of his studies during his ministry there; which has been well received by all age groups.

Fr. Gonzalez has also done pastoral work in the Archdiocese of München-Freising. Besides English, he is fluent in Spanish, German and Italian.
